 Un indicador és una mesura que proporciona una visió simplificada d'un fenomen més complex, o que dóna informació sobre tendències que no es poden observar directament, amb la finalitat de permetre quantificar la informació, simplificar-la i preparar-la perquè pugui ser utilitzada. Els indicadors són essencials per avaluar les iniciatives de gestió integrada de la zona costanera (GIZC) i monitoritzar-les, i, a més, per proporcionar un enfocament adaptatiu de la gestió del litoral a través de la generació de dades científiques fiables. D'aquesta manera, es facilita la presa de decisions i la gestió tant dels recursos costaners com de les activitats que es desenvolupen a la franja litoral.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Per definir una llista adequada d'indicadors per a la GIZC a les illes Balears és necessari comptar, d'una banda, amb el compromís dels agents polítics, socioculturals i econòmics que formen part de la realitat d'una àrea litoral concreta i, de l’altra, amb les exigències científiques identificades per assolir un veritable desenvolupament sostenible de la franja litoral.
