An indicator is a measurement providing a simplified view of a more complex phenomenon, or that gives information about tendencies that cannot be observed directly, so the researcher can quantify or simplify information and prepare it for use.

Indicators are essential to assess and monitor Integrated Coastal Area Management (ICAM) initiatives and provide an adaptational approach to coastal management through the generation of reliable scientific data. In this manner decision-making and management become easier, both in terms of resources and activities carried out along the coast.

To define an adequate list of ICAM indicators for the Balearic Islands requires commitment from political, socio-cultural and economic agents who form part of the reality of a certain coastal area, and the scientific demands needed to achieve true sustainable development of the coastline.
