Study and restoration proposals for the Sant Jordi storm channel in Pollença from the mouth of the water treatment works

The borough of Pollença is one of the most visited regions of Majorca and, so, a large part of its income comes from tourism. A drop in the quality of the waters of its bay would have a very negative effect on the area’s economy.

Sewage from the area is emitted into the bay from the Sant Jordi storm channel, after having first passed through the water treatment works (EDAR) located close to the storm channel itself. Given the rapid increase in population in this area, until recently the sewage entering the water treatment works was more than the installation could handle. So, for years the Sant Jordi storm channel and the Bay of Pollença have received large volumes of barely treated sewage. Despite the fact that the water treatment works have recently been remodelled and extended to solve the problem, there has still been no assessment of the environmental impact on the storm channel and bay of at least ten years of constant dumping of raw sewage.
